In 1835, the author undertook a geological journey to the Levant with Hugh Edwin Strickland and subsequently continued it alone. The Asia Minor portion of the journey led to this work. Hamilton was President of the Geological Society from 1854 to 1866. He was also a Member of Parliament for Newport on the Isle of Wight. "His work is full of valuable, carefully compiled information."
