Rare second edition of the adventure novel by Friedrich Gerstäcker, first published in 1854. The work depicts the experiences and travels of young Fritz Wildau and takes the reader to foreign lands, out to sea, and into non-European regions. The adventurous plot combines travel experiences, seafaring, hunting, encounters with foreign cultures and dangerous animals, as well as numerous dramatic situations. The book is part of the classic German adventure and youth literature of the 19th century. The rich illustration is particularly interesting. The second edition was additionally equipped with colored plates compared to the original edition. The illustrations are by Herbert König and Hermann Leutemann, two well-known book illustrators of the 19th century.

Condition

Clearly used antiquarian condition in need of restoration. The original illustrated binding is heavily rubbed, scuffed, stained, and significantly bumped at the edges and corners. The original spine covering is largely missing; the underlying fabric or binding is exposed. The covers are loosened and only partially attached to the book block.
