Time: immediately before the end of the Second World War
Historical registered letter from Prague dated May 2, 1945, only a few days before the end of the Second World War and immediately before the Prague Uprising of May 5, 1945.
Particularly striking is the attractive multiple franking featuring a total of six contemporary stamps of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia: five purple 60-heller stamps and one red 1.20-krone stamp. Together, this results in a franking of 4.20 Kronen, which appears to be a contemporary postal rate combination. The stamps bear the portrait of Adolf Hitler and the bilingual state designation “Böhmen und Mähren – Čechy a Morava”. Several clear “PRAHA 6” date stamps dated 2.V.45 tie the franking to the envelope.
On the left is the original registration label:
“Prag 6 / Praha 6 – 847”
as well as the large Czech marking “Doporučeně!” for registered mail.
It is precisely the very late date of use, May 2, 1945, that makes this item historically particularly interesting: it was mailed only a few days before the collapse of German rule in the Protectorate and the end of the war in Europe. The envelope is in a clearly used, authentic condition with creases, folds, edge wear, and age-related paper discoloration – see photo. These signs of use underscore its character as an actually posted contemporary historical mail item.
An interesting collector's item for philatelists, collectors of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, registered mail, postal history 1939–1945, as well as historical collections concerning the end of the Second World War.
