Arrival postmark: Sigmaringen, 15 February 1894
Period: German Empire
Historical, postally used letter from the German Empire dating to 1894, addressed in French to:
“Son Altesse Royale Madame la Princesse-Mère de Hohenzollern”
"Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother of Hohenzollern"
in Sigmaringen.
The recipient is likely Josephine of Baden (1813–1900), widow of Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and mother of, among others, the future King Carol I of Romania. The letter is franked with two red 10-Pfennig stamps of the Reichspost and bears contemporary postal cancellations. On the reverse is the clearly preserved arrival postmark SIGMARINGEN dated 15.2.94.
Also particularly attractive is the preserved sender's seal on the reverse, which allows the document to retain its original historical character. The envelope is in good, authentic condition for its age. There are slight creases, fold marks, and edge wear, as well as minor signs of use. The franking, address, seal, and postal stamps are well preserved – see images.
A particularly interesting collector's item for collectors of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, nobility and royal houses, the German Empire, Old German States/Reichspost, as well as 19th-century historical correspondence.
